Adding mathematical equations and its reference in Microsoft Word

Hi,

In this post, we will learn how to add mathematical equation in Microsoft Word. We will also learn how to add the reference to these equation in text as well. This feature is essential in writing research paper.

Type '=lorem()' in Microsoft Word to generate random text, as shown in below animation.

To insert the mathematical equation with its reference equation number we have to add table. To add table, go to Insert Menu and select Table and specify its rows and columns. For our case, I have selected 3x3 to add 3 equations, as shown below.

Go to Table properties by right click on top left of table and select the width of table to 100% as shown below:

In column tab, specify the width of Column 1 and 3 to 10% and column 2 to 80% as shown below:

The updated table will be shown as:

Then insert equation in middle column by selecting INSERT MENU > EQUATIONS (under symbol group). Sample equation are inserted in below figure:

Now insert equation number against equation in corresponding right column by selecting REFERENCE MENU > INSERT CAPTION (under caption group)

Now copy the equation number against each equation as shown:

Now select all (by pressing Ctrl + A) and press F9 to update all the equation references as shown below:

Now we have to add the equation reference in text. Select REFERENCE > CROSS-REFERENCE (under caption group) as shown below.

Equation reference in text is show:

Now, equations with reference number are added. Next step is hide all the table line by selecting None option in 'Borders and Shades'.

In the end, you can decorate the equation referencing by placing brackets around it.

Hope you like it. Please provide your valuable feedback.

Thanks.
